Learning More About The History & Culture Of Daytona Beach
Interested in visiting Daytona Beach, Florida? Let’s take a few minutes to go back over some of the history and culture of our wonderful city. Daytona Beach officially became a city all the way back in 1876. The three separate towns of Daytona, Daytona Beach and Seabreeze were merged into what is now known as Daytona Beach in 1926. The area is famous for two main attractions: the World’s Most Famous Beach and Daytona International Speedway.
Beautiful Beaches Inspire Racing Roots
The beaches in Daytona are unique, as they’re quite wide, smooth and are mostly made up of compacted sand. This attracted many automobile and motorcycle enthusiasts in the early 1900s, paving the way for a deeply ingrained and rich racing culture. As the area’s popularity grew, the sandy race tracks were replaced by the Daytona International Speedway, which was built by NASCAR founder William France. The raceway has been hosting the Daytona 500 since 1959, attracting thousands of tourists and racing fans each year.
These days, the hard-packed beach sands and lovely Atlantic Ocean views attract millions of visitors each year. The Daytona Beach area is one of only a few beaches within the US that still allows driving and parking on the beach itself. Over the years, the city has amassed a wide variety of famous landmarks and cultural centers. A few of these include The Clock Tower and Bandshell, The Daytona Beach Pier, and the Museum of Arts and Sciences.
There are a handful of fascinating, historical art and museum spots to visit. You’ll want to set aside time to plan and decide what’s most important to see during your trip. Here’s a short list of the most notable locations in Daytona Beach:
- Mary McLeod Bethune Performing Arts Center & Visual Arts Gallery
